Acupuncture and fertility

Sperm and egg

Fertility acupuncture can be undertaken to support people looking to conceive naturally as well as those preparing for IVF. Fertility acupuncture sessions include a detailed diagnosis to inform the treatment plan as well as a review of any conventional tests that have been done and advice on any that might be needed. Diet and lifestyle advice is another important component.

Tam is passionate about helping people to enhance their fertility and has completed CPD training with Australian fertility specialist Kirsten Wolfe.

The process usually starts with a discovery call to discuss how acupuncture can help, the stage you’re at and how we can work together. All new clients fill out a detailed fertility intake form that will help Tam understand what has happened so far, tests done, and any signs and symptoms. The first appointment is a longer session and includes a review of test results and advice on anything that may have been overlooked. Tam has been trained in the fertile life detective system and will look at the big picture, this includes an analysis of sperm results, blood tests, and BBT charts.

  • Have blood tests been done and what are the results?

  • Has sperm been tested? What was the volume, concentration, motility and morphology?

  • Are further tests needed?

  • Is ovulation happening and when?

  • Are there any conditions that could be having an impact: PCO, thyroid, Endometriosis etc?

  • Are BBT charts being recorded and what do they indicate?

  • Are supplements needed?

How does fertility acupuncture work?

For women fertility is closely linked with menstrual health and acupuncture treatment works alongside your cycle. Studies have shown acupuncture can impact fertility by regulating the hypothalamic-pituitary-ovarian (HPO) axis, stimulating blood flow to the ovaries, and helping to reduce stress.

Acupuncture and male fertility

When it comes to fertility acupuncture the focus is usually on the female. Depending on sperm test results it is often a good idea for male partners to seek treatment so that their sperm health can be improved. Diet and lifestyle can have a significant impact on sperm quality and there are serval different ways to improve sperm health. You may have visited your GP and been told your sperm is fine, but normal ranges have dropped over the years and ‘normal’ ranges are not the same as optimal which is what we want for conception. As an example 4% morphology might be within the normal range, but for fertility clients we would be looking to increase this to 14%.
