Pregnancy acupuncture

During pregnancy a woman’s physiology changes dramatically and acupuncture is a great way to provide support throughout her journey. Pregnancy ailments can be hard to treat conventionally and many pregnant women are understandably reluctant to take medications unless absolutely necessary. Acupuncture provides a safe and effective solution.

First trimester

During the first trimester many women feel physically exhausted and suffer from morning sickness. Acupuncture treatment in the first trimester can help to:

  • Boost energy

  • Reduce sickness

  • Calm the mind and regulate stress

Second trimester

Energy levels usually start to improve during the second trimester but new ailments include heartburn, and pain. Acupuncture can be useful to support:

  • Heartburn

  • Backache

  • Sciatica

  • Symphysis pubis pain

  • Varicose veins

  • Haemorrhoids

  • Constipation

Third trimester

The third trimester is the final stage of pregnancy from weeks 28 – 40 or whenever the baby is born. Many women start to feel more uncomfortable and tired during this stage. Acupuncture treatment in the third trimester can be used to support:

  • Oedema

  • Anaemia

  • Muscle cramps

  • Insomnia

  • Carpal tunnel

  • Anxiety

Pre-birth acupuncture

Pre-birth acupuncture is recommended weekly from week 36. Treatment at this last stage of pregnancy focuses on preparing the body for labour, and providing emotional support to help keep the woman as calm as possible.

Moxa treatment for breech babies

Moxa sticks are made from the leaves of a plant (Artemisia argyi) and used in traditional Chinese medicine to stimulate acupuncture points. Studies have shown that Moxibustion treatment to an acupuncture point on the foot (Bl 67) can be a safe and effective way to help turn a breech baby, and research suggests a high success rate of about 60%. During the treatment the woman and/or their partner is shown how to continue applying moxa at home every day for up to 10 days. Treatment is more likely to be successful from week 32-35 but can be undertaken up to week 38.

Induction acupuncture treatment

After the due date has passed induction treatment can be used to promote the start of labour for women who are post-term. The aim of the treatment is to stimulate uterine contractions, dilate the cervix and promote labour by invigorating and descending a woman’s energy. Some people only need one treatment, but most will need two or three so it is recommended to allow enough time for this with each treatment spaced out 2-3 days. Sometimes emotional factors can have an impact on oxytocin and therefore inhibit contractions, acupuncture can help to balance emotions as well as addressing any physical factors that are inhibiting birth.
